About the Artists

Alex and I met in 2002 when we first started teaching at the same institution. Early in our careers we became lunch buddies, co-taught an honors course and constructed an art installation together. She is currently an art professor at St. Edwards University in Austin, TX, and I’m a chemistry professor at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS. While we have always maintained our close friendship over the years, during the pandemic we started regularly “walking” together several days a week. We call each other and walk several miles while we talk about teaching, children, cooking, politics, art and life. It was during one of these walks shortly after RBG passed that we decided to do something together to commemorate her contributions to our world.

As women and as mothers we have both experienced moments of gender discrimination, both blatant and subtle, especially in professional settings and related to professional opportunities. In 2001 as a new mother and finalist for a teaching and research academic position I was told I was not chosen because several of the faculty were afraid to hire a women, especially a mother. They said they were concerned I would not be able to handle the job and would not be successful. The man they hired had children. We often find ourselves in positions where others make assumptions about what we would want or choose based on our gender.

When we think of all the opportunities and rights we DO have now as a result of the work of RBG, we are very grateful for her life’s work. There is so much more work to do to realize equality for everyone (race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability and conviction for an offense), but for this moment we want to celebrate some gains. —MH
