a day in Kansas

This design was inspired by driving across Kansas seeing the clusters of wind turbines along the interstate, visiting fields of sunflowers, walking through the prairies to observe Bison grazing and passing a meadowlark, the state bird, perched on a fencepost singing. While you are not likely to find them all in one place at the same time, they represent some of the rich beauty of this state. Kansas is also a place of ever-changing weather and beautiful skies which I hope to have captured by these hand-painted glaze designs.

All plates were wheel-thrown from mid-fire stoneware and have been fired three times. The blue and green plates are made from Flint Hills red stoneware and the rainbow and sunset plates are made from speckled stoneware. They are hand painted with glazes and underglazes. The iron oxide images of my original drawings were transferred using a standard process in ceramic arts.
